Who Knew? Did you know that job numbers in Saskatchewan hit the seventeenth straight record month in August according to Statistics Canada's Labour Force report? Farm Safety Program and Publications Grow Up With SafetyA pioneering farm health and safety school project that began in April 2001 has grown to encompass safety instruction for all Saskatchewan children. The project, led by Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC), is supported by Saskatchewan Labour, Saskatchewan Learning and many others. The project will provide teaching units that assist to integrate safety instruction into the Grades 1-9 Saskatchewan Health Education curriculum. Parental involvement is key to reinforcing safety education provided to children in schools. The "Comprehensive School Health" framework of the program will ensure that additional resources target parents and involve community organizations. The program was introduced to Saskatchewan schools in October 2006. Materials were distributed to Health curriculum coordinators in each school division for distribution to all schools. The AITC organization brings many new resources to the prevention of injuries in Saskatchewan. Their network of "Ag Ambassadors" in schools throughout Saskatchewan will help to spread the word about safety issues. Other school/community support for Grow Up With Safety will come from a diverse group of other organizations inside/outside Saskatchewan concerned with protecting the health/safety of children. The funding support of Cargill Ag Horizons, Farm Credit Canada, and Agriculture and Agri-food Canada and Mosaic for this program is greatly appreciated. Grow Up With Safety Program (GUWS) is a collaborative effort of the Government of Saskatchewan, the Government of Canada, the private sector and a number of Canadian injury prevention organizations. Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) and Saskatchewan Labour co-ordinate the project through a multi-agency steering committee. GUWS is a collection of Grades 1-9 teaching/learning resources that have been constructed, by teachers, for use within Saskatchewan's Health Education curriculum. The program is intended for use in rural, urban and northern schools and is adaptable for use in other jurisdictions that use a decision-making model in their health education. GUWS is designed to combine the efforts of the family, the school and community injury prevention organizations in reducing fatal/disabling injury among our children. This system-wide, cost-effective and sustainable approach to injury prevention will help protect our children and, over time, allow them to incorporate safety into their everyday lives. GUWS resources have been developed in conjunction with education and injury prevention professionals.
