The Radiation Health and Safety Act, 1985 and The Radiation Health and Safety Regulations, 2005 govern the province's radiation standards for the safety of radiation device users and the public and outlines the responsibilities of the Radiation Safety Unit.

Radiation Safety Unit

The Radiation Safety Unit works to ensure that owners and operators of radiation devices and the public are not exposed unnecessarily to radiation from:

  • x-ray equipment
  • lasers
  • ultraviolet devices
  • radiofrequency/radar emitting devices
  • microwave emitting devices
  • infrared emitting devices
  • ultrasound equipment

In addition, the Radiation Safety Unit has guidelines for naturally occurring radioactive materials and radon in dwellings, for tanning salon owners/operators and for laser pointers.
